When the first Thor movie hit theaters Loki was named as the main villain but there were other threats in the film, specifically the Frost Giants and their leader Laufey.
A new report from Deadline says actor Christopher Eccleston (Destro in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra) has been cast to play the leader of the Dark Elves, Malekith the Accursed. Malekith has superhuman strength, durability and wields Dark Faerie magic.
Whether Malekith and the Dark Elves are the main antagonists or just a secondary threat—like the Frost Giants—remains to be seen. Without any other announcements of a larger villain role being cast we have to assume this is the major threat to Thor and Asgard.
Looks like the mystery surrounding what 'The Dark World' means in the title of the sequel has been solved with the addition of Malekith and Dark Elves.
