'Community' Paintball Episodes Led to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Directors Getting a Job With Marvel

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is filming in the hometown of directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It's the third movie the brothers have filmed in Cleveland. Known more for their work in television, specifically Community and Arrested Development, the duo has won an Emmy for their past work on the decade old, newly renewed Netflix series.

"We couldn't be happier to be in Cleveland doing this," Anthony Russo told Cleveland.com
"We really appreciate everyone's support and patience," said Joe Russo. "Obviously, coming in and shutting down roads and complicating people's daily commute is not one of the initial benefits of the film. But being able to bring money here and jobs and putting people to work is part of building momentum. The more big films that come here, more will follow."

But what landed them the director gig(s) for the Captain America sequel?

"We were working on the third season of 'Community,' and we got a call from our agent saying [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige was a big fan of the show and wanted to know if we would come in to talk about the next 'Captain America' movie," said Joe. "I think Kevin had seen the paintball episode we did on 'Community' and thought, these guys should be directing action movies."

The Russos are just another example of how Marvel Studios likes to go against the grain and find unique directors to helm their big budget movies. It has been said that this is Marvel's way of keeping things fresh on the big screen and so far they're doing a bang-up job having their past two films net over $2.5 billion in worldwide tickets sales (as of the publishing of this post).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier releases on April 4, 2014.
