AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Has Comic Book Collectors on the Hunt For the Villain's First Appearances

When writer/director Joss Whedon came out on the stage in Hall H of Marvel Studios' Comic-Con panel last weekend not many expected he would reveal the new title of the sequel to The Avengers. But he did and he did it in such a way that Marvel Studios put together a teaser video leading into the reveal of the new title for what is now officially know as Avengers: Age of Ultron. (Not related to the plot of the comic book story arc of the same name, by the way.)

Now websites and columnists are going nuts trying to figure out who the ultimate creator of the ensemble film's sequel will be (cough, cough, Tony Stark, cough). An after-effect of the new title announcement, if you will. However, comic book collectors have now gone crazy looking through their personal collections and hitting up local comic shops and websites like eBay and Amazon to either buy or sell the first cameo of the robotic villain and his first full appearance issue as well.

Created during what is referred to as the Silver Age of comics (which is approximately 1956-1970), Ultron's first cameo was seen in Avengers No. 54 and then his first full appearance was in the following issue, Avengers No. 55. Both of these issues have sky-rocketed in price since Whedon revealed the new title of the 2015 sequel.

The popularity even hit the Comic-Con floor the day after the announcement as many of the comic book vendors at the convention openly admitted to The Daily SuperHero the initial buyer traffic for that morning were collectors asking for both Avengers issue Nos. 54 and 55.

But then there's that whole online buying aspect in today's digital domains.

Collectors have flooded eBay and Amazon buying up all the copies of both of Ultron's first issues for at least five-times the value of what it was worth the day before Whedon's big title announcement. This is very similar to what happened to the first appearance of Thanos, after his quick cameo in the credits scene of The Avengers. Thanos' first appearance, in Invincible Iron Man No. 55, quadrupled after his movie cameo and now you are considered lucky to find a non-thrashed copy of his first appearance going for less than $1,000.

Ultron is the next in line for the inflated first appearance treatment and if you don't grap up a copy now, then the current $50-$150 going rate for his Avengers Nos. 54 and 55 books will only go up higher and higher. So high to the point that you will probably wish that you would've bought a copy now. Those books are not going down in price anytime soon, so buy them now if you want them or forever be haunted of the thought that The Daily SuperHero told you to do it now, but you didn't and waiting too long to finally try and buy it. [Sarcastic and smug smile.]
