New OPTIMUS PRIME Vehicle Mode in TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Was Due to New Partnership Deal

Back when director Michael Bay was working on the first Transformers live action movie, he released an image of the official vehicle mode for the Autobot leader Optimus Prime. The fan base hated it initially because it was not a similar design like his classic look from the 1980s. And because Optimus' movie look also sported hot rod flames.

Three films later and most of the fan base is over their knee-jerk reaction to Optimus' adapted vehicle mode for the big screen version of the robot hero.

While Bay wraps principle photography for next summer's fourth addition to the nearly $3 billion worldwide movie franchise with Transformers: Age of Extinction, Optimus has gone through another vehicle mode update. Granted the changes are minimal, compared to the first three movies, but Optimus looks sleeker and more streamlined with his new vehicle mode.

Apparently there's an interesting reason behind the vehicle change in the fourth film. According to the website administrator for Bay's forum, Shoot For The Edit, the vehicle seen as Optimus in the first three films was not a part of any partnership with any big rig manufacturer. Matter of fact, the big rig company didn't want any part of it.

"The truck company for Optimus Prime in TF 1-2-3 never wanted anything to do with the movie franchise. Before filming the first TF movie, the production crew approach the truck company to see if they could lend them 2 trucks. They said no. The producers then found 2 old rusty 1995 models that barely worked and gave them a paint job that got the job done with a very tight budget for chrome and stuff. This time around, Western Star (a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America) gave them 2 new trucks. No questions asked. Optimus Prime was painted by West Coast Customs."

Talk about failing to be a part of a nearly $3 billion film franchise to help your brand. Western Star obviously has common sense and logic in the hierarchy of the company and this is why Optimus' vehicle mode looks a bit different in Transformers: Age of Extinction.
