One theory post, this one from in mid-July, was that Diesel could really be starring as Black Bolt in a hopeful Phase 3 Inhumans movie. Seeing as how Diesel's voice will be used as Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, then it makes sense to cast him in the role of Black Bolt, as the Inhumans team leader who does not speak much since his voice is his superpower. Another theory post was also written saying as how the actor could potentially be playing Thanos. The villain is confirmed to have a small role in Guardians of the Galaxy and will play an even bigger part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 3, too. Moving to the present day at the Thor: The Dark World premiere in Los Angeles last night, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was in attendance and was told that actor Chris Pratt—who plays Star-Lord—talked about Diesel voicing Groot and Gunn seemed shocked Pratt did this. Gunn's response also appeared as if he was worried about what Pratt might have said. Maybe Gunn was not worried so much Groot, but worried Pratt may have spoke too much about Diesel's involvement. This reaction has now brought back the possible theory that Diesel is really playing Thanos as well as voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.
It could be Marvel Studios' best kept secret right now. This would also line up with the fact Diesel said he and Marvel have talked about the actor being in Marvel's future for more than just a voice acting gig.
While some may think holding onto this theory may be stupid or desperate and wishful thinking, let's go back to a video Diesel posted online a couple weeks back. In this video, which you can see by clicking right here, the actor is in between scenes for his next Fast and Furious sequel walking around on stilts. Many websites and fans thought he was prepping for motion capture work as Groot because he has also said he will be doing mo-cap work in post-production for Guardians. However, Diesel did not specify what mo-cap work he was doing and he could really prepping to play a seven or eight-foot-tall Thanos instead.
Again, based on Gunn's reaction at the Thor 2 premiere of being asking about Pratt talking Diesel in a previous interview... it seems like the Vin Diesel conspiracy theory talk needs to still be considered until an official word is issued by Marvel Studios.
So far Phase 2 films are all about having a surprise twist. Iron Man 3 had the Mandarin twist and it is confirmed that Thor: The Dark World has its own twist in it too but that's all you'll get about that since it is not released in the U.S. for a couple more days. Having Diesel be Thanos would definitely be a nice twist in Guardians.
Stay tuned because even though he is voicing Groot that might not be Diesel's only role in Guardians of the Galaxy and beyond into Phase 3.
