Captain America: The Winter Soldier was such a huge critical and box office hit that Marvel Studios decided to bring back Joe and Anthony Russo to direct Captain America 3 as it was released in theaters last April. Set for a home release on September 9, the Russos spoke with Yahoo! Movies about the sequel but more importantly they gave some hints at what is in store for Captain America 3.
The Russos said Rogers' relationship with Bucky Barnes (a.k.a. Winter Soldier) will continue to be a theme as well as having a political theme to the threequel.
"The character [of the Winter Soldier] was invented for an explicitly political purpose. So it’s hard to get away from that nature."
The Russos also hinted at a different Winter Soldier than most comic book fans might be familiar with.
" [We will be] bringing some new elements to the table that will give us a twist on Winter Soldier."
Marvel Studios is no stranger to having a twist in their films. (Cough! ... the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 ... cough!) And while the most hardcore comic book fan purists can be stubborn when it comes to matching canon exactly in the comics as in the films, they are finally start to recognize that adapting the comics is how the studio works. This is no different than adapting Aldrich Killian, Whiplash, the Mandarin and even the villain Yellowjacket in next year's Ant-Man.
Captain America 3 is set to release on May 6, 2016 and should start filming sometime in the first half of 2015.
