DOCTOR STRANGE: Marvel Studios and Director Scott Derrickson Are Being Very Thorough in Their Actor Search



There has been a lot of fanfare surrounding a Marvel Studios actor casting for Doctor Strange. Not since the studio was looking for its Captain America and Thor leading actors has there been so many rumored and reportedly targeted actor names hitting the news wires, and rumor mill.

While Doctor Strange may not be as popular of a mainstream name and character as Cap and Thor, he will be once his movie hit theaters sometime in 2016, or perhaps after — no release date has been officially announced yet. What was once a short list became Joaquin Phoenix's role to lose and then he bowed out. His representation has told TheWrap.com that despite conflicting reports, the actor is definitely out of the running.

With Phoenix officially out (again), the short list of actor names has now become quite a long list. According to The HollywoodReporter.com, Variety.com, TheWrap.com and BadassDigest.com, here are all the actor names who are reportedly being targeted by Marvel and director Scott Derrickson for the leading role of Doctor Strange:


  • Jared Leto
  • Benedict Cumberbatch
  • Keanu Reeves
  • Ryan Gosling
  • Ewan McGregor 
  • Jake Gyllenhaal
  • Ethan Hawke
  • Matthew McConaughey
  • Oscar Isaac
  • Justin Theroux
  • Colin Farrell


Yesterday, TheWrap also reported who the frontrunners are:

"Cumberbatch, [TheWrap redacted Phoenix's name from here], Farrell and Reeves are believed to be the four frontrunners at this point, though Jared Leto, Justin Theroux and Oscar Isaac are also pursuing the role."

It needs to be noted that every other day there seems to be a new "frontrunner list" for the role of Doctor Strange. It's obvious the studio and Derrickson are doing their due diligence and looking at as many available actors as possible to pick the absolute best candidate for the role. And who can sign a long term deal and commitment to the role too.

Stay tuned because The Daily SuperHero's own production insider told me Marvel is really, really hoping to have an official announcement for Doctor Strange before the end of November.
