Marvel Studios is shifting it's focus onto Phase 3 and when they do, Thor will be the most important piece of its larger storyline. Officially titled Thor: Ragnarok, the threequel is being written by Christopher Yost — who wrote Thor: The Dark World — and is confirmed to not only star Chris Hemswoth as Thor (duh!) but actor Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki. (Cue the squeee!)
Studio president Kevin Feige shared a bit of information on the importance of Thor: Ragnarok in Phase 3.
"This is a very important movie for us in Phase 3. We plan on taking Thor to another level. It picks up where we leave Thor in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' and impacts everything that comes after."
In the comics, Ragnarok refers to what is more or less the Norse apocalypse and the presumed death of Thor. Tony Stark then clones the Thunder God with a piece of Thor's hair. However, the comic book story arc of the same name may have nothing to do with the movie version. One a quick comment about: please, please, please introduce Beta Ray Bill in this movie.
Thor: Ragnarok releases in theaters on July 28, 2017.
