At the end of October, Deadline reported that actor Benedict Cumberbatch was in final talks to land the leading role in Doctor Strange. After weeks of dodging the question, Cumberbatch can finally come clean.
Marvel has officially announced Cumberbatch is indeed the Master of the Mystic Arts.
“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige said, via Marvel.com. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
Marvel's Phase 3 slate of films is its most ambitious yet by introducing new characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe including: Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and the Inhumans. Part of the reason for such an ambitious Phase of films is to introduce the next generation of heroes to carry the torch beyond Phase 3 once Phase 1 and 2 actor contracts expire.
Please note that a year ago, The Daily SuperHero was the only website who reported that Marvel wanted Cumberbatch despite all the rumors he could be in the next Star Wars movie. Then, back even further in June 2013, The Daily SuperHero was the only website to report that the actor who would be cast as Doctor Strange would be very important in carrying on as the new star of the MCU beyond Phase 3. With the addition of Cumberbatch, insider sources appear to have been correct with both reports.
Doctor Strange releases in theaters on November 4, 2016.
