Several weeks ago, The Daily SuperHero received an email from an anonymous source claiming to know why Marvel Studios pushed back the release of Doctor Strange. The studio previously set a date for an untitled film on July 8, 2016, which was being reported by many websites to be for Doctor Strange. This email could not be confirmed so I never wrote about it or mentioned it, but now Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed what I was told.
Marvel pushed back the release because of Cumberbatch's schedule conflicts in summer 2015. The actor told The Wall Street Journal, "I’ve got a few things to get under my belt first [and before Doctor Strange]. I’ve got to do that little stage production of 'Hamlet' in the summer and the Christmas special of 'Sherlock'..."
There wasn't much media coverage about the change of release date when Marvel announced their entire Phase 3 slate of movies, back in October. And after announcing so many new films, this kind of got lost in the hype of everything that was coming from the studio. However, and for those fans who need to know every bit of information, why Doctor Strange went from a speculated July 2016 release — Marvel claimed the July 8, 2016 date in summer 2014 — to its official release on November 4, 2016 was due to Cumberbatch's schedule.
