No other actor has played the same role over and over again as much as Hugh Jackman has done with Wolverine. And no actor has gone back and forth deciding how much longer he wants to continue reprising that role as Jackman has.
In April 2014, Jackman went public about his thoughts on continuing to play Wolverine and he said he thought he had two films left in him. Those two films were assumed to be X-Men: Apocalypse and the sequel to The Wolverine. He has been confirmed for the latter but the former has not been officially confirmed... yet.
When asked about his future as Wolverine, back in April 2014, Jackman said, "If I did another one I’m 99.9% sure it would be the last, so that will inform what it is for me."
Fast-forward to right now and the actor seems 99.9% sure that he will play Wolverine for much, much longer. E! Online reports:
"Jackman explained how watching Michael Keaton in Birdman inspired him, saying, 'I said to my wife, 'The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I've got to find a way to keep playing him until I die.' I know that someday they'll recast the role with another actor…I'd be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.'"
Jackman's change of heart could have been slightly influenced due to the recent news that Sony will allow Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe via a new partnership deal with Marvel Studios. When Jackman first heard about this, the look on his face was that of surprise, shock and it was priceless (see photos below). Especially since he's been quite vocal, after The Avengers made over $1 billion, that he'd love to be teamed up with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and the others. Sadly, there seems to be some alleged friction between 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios so the likelihood of it happening is slim... but that's what many used to think and say about Spidey joining up with the MCU too.
