In August 2014, rumors began circulating the web that actor Jeremy Renner would reprise his role of Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War. Shortly after, Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo said they could not talk about the possibility of Hawkeye being included in the next Cap film.
The following month Renner trolled the Marvel fanbase by giving them a wink during an interview when he was asked about Hawkeye being in Civil War. Finally, and only a few days after his wink tease, Renner told the media he was not sure if he was in Cap 3.
All of this teasing and trolling is 'The Marvel Studios Way' when it comes to actors talking about future character appearances. Robert Downey Jr. does it all the time and many of the other actors do the same.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter states Renner will start filming Captain America: Civil War this spring although Marvel Studios has not confirmed it... yet. Renner will join a very large cast that will jump-start Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by putting Captain America against Iron Man where both heroes have separate views which are set up by the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and thus divides them.
As of right now the main Civil War cast will have: Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Downey), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Renner), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and actor Daniel Brühl in an undisclosed role. The threequel could also have appearances by Brock Rumlow/Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and a rumored debut appearance in the MCU by Spider-Man (actor T.B.D.).
Captain America: Civil War releases in theaters on May 6, 2016.
