The next Spider-Man movie isn't coming out until summer 2017 but it's definitely being worked on right now and Drew Goddard is allegedly developing it and the front runner to direct the Sony and Marvel Studios film. Spider-Man is also rumored to be making an appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, and if this is indeed true then it makes sense why an actor short list has now been revealed by TheWrap.
According to the trade website, the following actors are all lined up for test offers to audition for the role: Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet and Liam James. The site also mentions how more names could be added to this list depending on how these actors test for the role in the coming weeks.
The list confirms Sony and Marvel want a really young looking Peter Parker. This also fits in line with what Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently said with Parker being in his mid-teens and how "young doesn't quite fit in" the Marvel Cinematic Universe where, so far, its heroes have all been adults.
But please note that this actor short list is also coming from the same reporter who previously said (via SlashFilm), "Spider-Man’s not going to be white. I’m 95% sure. Spider-Man’s going to be most likely black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white." So take this new short list report with a grain of salt because, according to this reporter's new actor list, Spider-Man will definitely be a white actor.
Regardless of that older and now highly inaccurate report CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR set to start filming in May, so Sony and Marvel need to make their decision on who the next Spider-Man will be soon. Especially if he makes his first appearance/cameo in the 2016 Cap threequel.
The still untitled Spider-Man movie releases on July 28, 2017.
