Those who read comic books know all to well about Hank Pym and his multiple hero personalities. Pym is a tortured hero in the comics and it's one of the reasons he's a fascinating character.
In the new ANT-MAN movie, actor Michael Douglas portrays Pym but as an older version of the character. The film is also just as much of a heist movie as it is a mentor/protégé movie between Pym and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd).
According to a new interview in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, when director Peyton Reed was hired he wanted a movie that took itself more seriously than the previous director's version. Plus, Reed really wanted to explore the messed up side of Pym.
"For one thing Marvel have let me explore the dark side of Hank Pym, this tortured, guilt-ridden guy. I love that this is a mentor/pupil story, but with a [fudge]ed up pupil and a really [fudge]ed up mentor."
Fans might have wanted to see a young Hank Pym wearing the suit as Ant-Man in this film, but the older Pym will be just as involved in this story. It's been previously reported how Pym is the connective tissue that binds ANT-MAN to the much larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
ANT-MAN releases on July 17, 2015.
