SDCC 2015 LEGO Marvel's Avengers Interview: Could There be Other Phase 1 and 2 Moments in the Game? Maybe

At San Diego Comic-Con 2015, The Daily SuperHero was one of a few members of the press who were invited to speak to representatives of Marvel Games to talk about the new video game LEGO Marvel's Avengers.

The new game is being presented as “A celebration of The Avengers” both in comics and on film and will feature moments from THE AVENGERS — like the Battle of New York — and from AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. One thing that isn't being talked about is if the game will have any moments from any of Marvel Studios' other Phase 1 or Phase 2 movies.

Well, The Daily SuperHero went into this interview ready to ask about it and did. While Marvel Games' executive producer Mike Jones did not confirm anything, his answer was a bit of a hint that their might be some fun nods to other Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 1 and Phase 2 moments in the game.

“Well... [Jones randomly clears his throat]... there is nothing to announce [regarding other MCU moments in the game] but let's just say we are celebrating The Avengers," Jones said. "And the way that we assemble The Avengers in the films there is a lot of stories there and there's a lot more going on with those characters. We are certainly looking at how we can leverage those [other film moments] in the game, but we don't have anything to announce... [awkward pause]... but really there's nothing to announce right now.”

Fair enough. All that was needed is a hint and Jones, in my personal opinion witnessing his body language, seemed to imply there could be other Phase 1 and 2 moments in LEGO Marvel's Avengers.

But what about the Avengers' narrative between the two films? Of course there were other solo hero movies during this timeframe but did Marvel Games need to talk to Marvel Studios to fill in some gaps for gameplay purposes? The short answer is yes, because Marvel Studios' offices are right down the hall from Marvel Games's offices and they did collaborate together on filling those gaps.

“Our Marvel Studios team has an idea of the entire narrative tapestry of where all those films fit in and they have a really good idea of what happened between the films,” Jones said. “And so we work with them and we talk with them and say 'How do you get from the end of this film to the beginning of the next film and what happens in the meantime? And how do we make sure it's a cohesive story and gameplay experience?' So we actually did work with them and came up with fun bridging content, like we're filling in the cracks for gameplay purposes.”
