SDCC LEGO Marvel's Avengers Interview, Part 2: Open World, New York Hub, Team-Up Moves and Movie Audio

The Daily SuperHero was one of a few press members who were invited to sit down and talk about the new video game LEGO Marvel's Avengers with Marvel Games' creative director Bill Rosemann and executive producer Mike Jones, as well as TT Games producer Matt Ellison. The guys couldn't reveal too much, but they did reveal some new things about the game.

This is Part 2 of a 3-part interview talking about how the Avenger' history has been incorporated into the new game.

On the addition of team-up moves:

Mike Jones: We're really into the idea of Avengers team-up and teamwork and things the characters can do together and not just on their own.

Matt Ellison: They'll do moves together like they did in the film when Cap [boosted] Black Widow up onto the Chitauri ship or like in AGE OF ULTRON where Thor smashed Cap's shield ['Batter Up!']. So we took that stuff and fit it into the gameplay... so it also improved on the combat.

Teasing that "Hulk SMASH!" moment from THE AVENGERS:

MJ: [By the way] that scene that everyone loves of Hulk smashing [in The Avengers]... is gonna be awesome!

Bill Rosemann: It's gonna be a lot of fun!!

About the open world of New York and beyond:

MJ: New York is going to be bigger and more alive with more stuff to do.

ME: ...[T]he New York / Manhattan hub. For this game we are revisiting that, revamping it and theming it more to THE AVENGERS by adding some new locations but also with the [influence] of the AGE OF ULTRON film where they sort of went around the world and visited different places. We're gonna have different locations that we travel to in order to take the hub experience to the next level. So it's not just New York in this one.

On using audio straight from the Marvel Studios films... and then some:

ME: One of the cool things we have in this game is... since this is an authentic thing... we are using the [movie audio] stems from the film. So when you hear Iron Man in a cut scene, that's Robert Downey Jr. For the majority of the characters we are using their stems and that's going to be amazing.

MJ: And we got a lot of the actors to record new dialogue.
