ANT-MAN proved all the Marvel Studios doubters wrong (again, after GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY did it a year ago). Not only by it's $455 million worldwide box office take (so far), but because it is getting a sequel!
So this news should not surprise anyone who kept up with director Peyton Reed's comments once ANT-MAN was released this past summer. Reed spoke several times to various media outlets going on record that he would love to return to the franchise to direct a hopeful sequel. In fact, Reed went so far to say he would love to helm a prequel following the past adventures of a young Hank Pym as Ant-Man.
Since Marvel Studios confirmed a sequel was coming, it was only a matter of time until Reed's name would pop up to direct ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. Today, The Hollywood Reporter brings news that Reed and Marvel have entered negotiations to direct the sequel.
Marvel Studios and Disney must have had a good feeling that ANT-MAN would open big in China seeing as how they green lit its sequel before its Chinese release. And of course it seems like a brilliantly planned move since ANT-MAN opened to over $45 million in China this past weekend. The film's $455 million worldwide box office performance (so far) places ANT-MAN over its fellow Marvel films: THE INCREDIBLE HULK, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and THOR.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP releases on July 6, 2018.
