When details about the cast of ANT-MAN began coming out, many fans were annoyed that Hank Pym was not going to be a young man and focus of the film. As in the comics, Pym was a founding member of the Avengers and fans wanted a more comic book-like portrayal of the character in ANT-MAN.
Honestly, they kind of got it but in flashbacks as a digitally modified and younger Michael Douglas was seen in the movie; as well as teases of his younger adventures as Ant-Man. Meanwhile, Douglas stepped in as the mentor figure of the film for Paul Rudd's character Scott Lang.
Now that ANT-MAN has pulled in over $500 million in worldwide box office sales, it has been green lit by Marvel Studios for a sequel, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. And Douglas has told Collider that he got a phone call from Marvel to return as Pym.
"I just got a call recently – they want to negotiate for a sequel and I thought 'That’s great!' Hopefully, I won’t have to carry quite as much expositional dialogue as the first one but I had a wonderful time doing it. Just a great, great time. The cast was fantastic. Paul, Evangeline, Michael Pena – I’m sure he’ll be back. If they can scrape Corey Stoll off the wall, I’m sure they’ll want him too – he’s such a good villain. And Peyton too. It was a lovely experience, so you know, I welcome it. I chuckle about being involved with a movie that already has a release date in 2018. Ya know, it’s hard to conceive of that, but it’s all good, all the way around, it’s all good."
Sounds like Douglas is excited and he should be as Pym is needed to help get his daughter ready to don the Wasp suit.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP releases on July 6, 2018.
