In early November, a wild rumor hit the web claiming that all merchandise depicting actor Carrie Fisher in her iconic 'Slave Leia' attire from STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI would be soon retired by Disney. Many thought this was good, while many others thought it was a ridiculous sensitivity issue. Regardless of what side of this rumor you are one, Fisher has made her stance on it publicly known.
The Wall Street Journal caught up with the always candid Fisher and asked her about the merch rumor and her answer was perfect.
WSJ: There’s been some debate recently about whether there should be no more merchandise with you in the “Return of the Jedi” bikini.
Fisher: I think that’s stupid.
WSJ: To stop making the merchandise?
Fisher: The father who flipped out about it, “What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?” Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.
There is a negative connotation with the word 'slave,' but Fisher is absolutely dead-on to re-enforce the fact that Leia is a strong, heroic woman who managed to take out Jabba... all while still in the skimpy outfit he put her into that has had many so angry.
Bravo Fisher, you nailed it with your answer.
