DOCTOR STRANGE Scene Quotes Involving the Ancient One and Benedict Cumberbatch Talks Physicality

The new issue of Entertainment Weekly is out and all about DOCTOR STRANGE. The news outlet was on set of the 2016 Marvel Studios film, due on November 4, and they had a chance to see a scene and report on a little of it.

The following scene tease is with actors Benedict Cumberbatch (Stephen Strange) and Tilda Swinton (the Ancient One). EW wrote the following, as transcribed by The Daily SuperHero, in their new print issue:

"On a soundstage in the London suburbs, Benedict Cumberbatch is getting in Tilda Swinton's face.
"'I don't believe in fairy tales about chakras or energy or the power of belief,' a bearded and bedraggled Cumberbatch growls. 'There is no such thing as a spirit! We are made of matter and nothing more!'
"The Sherlock star is playing Stephen Strange, a brilliant, arrogant New York surgeon whose hands are badly damaged in a car accident. Desperate to heal his extremities, he travels to Kathmandu, Nepal, in the hope of meeting Swinton's mysterious character, the Ancient One.
"In Doctor Strange... their introductory powwow at the Ancient One's pagoda rapidly turns unpleasant as Strange discovers that the guidance on offer is more metaphysical than medical.
"'Free your mind, and the rest will follow,' the pale-robed [Ancient One] advises."

Cumberbatch also spoke to EW about the physicality of the role.

“There’s a huge amount of physicality. He’s physically a very strong presence in the world. His hands are no longer capable of the fine skill needed for delicate surgery but physically he’s still strong. There’s a lot of running. There’s a lot of craziness: falling, flying, jumping, fighting, punching, getting punched. It’s really rough and tumble.”
