Having already screened an unfinished (per Fox reps) movie cut for fans at a DEADPOOL special preview event in New York and L.A. several days ago, the buzz is certainly building for the R rated Marvel movie from Fox. This is a movie made for the fans by Deadpool fans and initial tracking numbers for its opening weekend in the U.S. are quite impressive for an R rated movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DEADPOOL is tracking for an opening weekend tally somewhere between $55-$60 million domestically right now. A big haul considering its limited viewership due to its mature rated content.
The opening projection could/should increase a bit over the next three weeks, prior to its February 12 release, as Fox's marketing push kicks into high gear. But as of right now its predicted numbers are right up there with recent R rated opening releases like Straight Outta Compton and TED. This projected opening tally would place DEADPOOL in the Top 10 for biggest R rated domestic opening weekends ever.
While it may not claim the No. 1 all-time domestic spot for an R rated movie, currently held by The Matrix Reloaded with $91.7 million, a $55-$60 million opening weekend would be a huge score for Fox since DEADPOOL reportedly has approximately one-third the production budget of PG-13 super hero films. (No. 1 rated R box office weekend is for a 3-day opening via BoxOfficeMojo.)
