“I can’t wait to show you my toys…”
Part of me can’t decide whether I just saw the new trailer for the DC Comics film adaptation for SUICIDE SQUAD or if I was just punched in the mouth in a really fun way. Freddie Mercury and the Joker…come on! Either way I think director David Ayer might really be onto something here. The newest trailer for SUICIDE SQUAD gave us a ton of new footage, different looks at characters and when we look back on it in a few years, maybe some of the most iconic scenes in all of comic book movie history.
We start off with shots of most of the squad locked up in Belle Reve. The prison scenes, I believe, will be imperative to this movie because it shows just how much being a part of Task Force X is worth to our criminals. Accomplishing this mission gets them less time in this Hell hole they hate so much. It also shows a feeling of isolation and just how cut off they are from the world.
Then, we get moments of the characters interacting with the prison staff. Most likely after they’ve been given word about what they’re needed to do. Each of those moments somewhat moonlight a little bit about who they are as characters. Deadshot puts up his fists to take on multiple prison guards, showing it’s him against the world. After which he delivers a smart-mouthed comment to the guards anyway. Harley Quinn laughs and makes a borderline uncomfortable joke about the voices in her head. Boomerang, who punches first, opens his mouth a lot and asks questions later.
Boomerang is my nomination for breakout character in this film. Actor Jai Courtney, who really hasn’t won American audiences over with many of his roles to date, has a real chance to take a unique character and make it his own as well as kicking a little ass in the process. Ayer may even be counting on him to deliver a good amount of the humor in the film, as evident by him cracking open a beer during what seems like a big battle scene in the movie. Next, we’re delivered another rundown of a portion of the team with a voice over from Colonel Rick Flagg, played by Joel Kinnaman.

Can I just say that the makeup on Killer Croc looks fantastic? And how cool was that moment of him pulling a prison guard underwater? After seeing him in this trailer, I’m penciling in Killer Croc versus Ben Affleck’s Batman as one of my must-happen fanboy moments to see on screen.
While it sort of draws away from that gritty realistic aspect we’ve seen from some of DC’s live action properties, the powers displayed from Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo and Cara Delevinge’s Enchantress look visually fantastic.

Then it’s action, action and more action! There are a lot of good moments from all the members of the team, and obviously a lot of punching and bullets. One thing I believe the trailer did a fantastic job of was setting the world the team is going to be in. It’s something different and little uncomfortable to them. It’s something most likely caused by the magic of the Enchantress and if they aren’t careful, they could wind up dead. Although I have fears that this movie could give us too much of Will Smith, I’ll take it as long as he’s making bullets reign from Deadshot’s wrist guns while he’s wearing his trademark eye piece.
Although we were presented with many new moments for Jared Leto’s soon to be iconic take on the Joker — including the ever imperative transformation scene with Dr. Harley Quinzel — these two stuck out the most to me. They don’t only show an actor driving into the depths of madness to bring life to a character, but they show a slightly different spin on the beloved character, the Joker.
David Ayer may have best summed up the society shocking performance by Leto we’re about to see.
Those next phases he's stated couldn’t be more evident than in the beautified spill into criminal insanity we saw from the Joker in this trailer.
"There is a lot of respect for what the Joker represents, who he is as a character," Ayer told USA Today. "He is the best known villain in fiction so there’s an incredible responsibility there to also be faithful to what he is but at the same time push him into this next world, next time, next phase."

A quick side note: Was I the only one who was possibly thinking there were signs of Tony Montana mixed with a nod to the "gangster" Jack Nicholson Joker in the trailer? All wrapped up with pure madness?
