DEADPOOL Interview: Creator Rob Liefeld Shares His Experience in Getting the Movie Made the Right Way
The Daily SuperHero had a chance to get some questions answered from Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld this week. Produced by Laura Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg and Ryan Reynolds, directed by Tim Miller and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick DEADPOOL (also created by Fabian Nicieza) is set to hit it big in the box office this weekend.
Liefeld spoke about when he visited Fox and spoke with their executives to help the studio make this movie the right way.
Liefeld spoke about when he visited Fox and spoke with their executives to help the studio make this movie the right way.
"Back in late summer 2009, I was brought in initially by the producers to talk how they could make things right by Deadpool fans. They acknowledged that they had not maximized the characters potential in Wolverine: Origins and wanted to make certain they nailed it. The kind of things we discussed was the tone and characters and direction of what a Deadpool story could be."
"For instance, they asked me who I thought should be the love interest. Siryn or Vanessa. I lobbied hard for Vanessa because Siryn was too complicated and would need more time explaining. Vanessa was the first love and I felt their story was stronger."
He briefly spoke about other characters and X-Men who ended up in the script of DEADPOOL.
"[Fox] asked if he should interact with X-Men characters and I felt strongly that those ties should be evident. There were villains I advised against and educated them that they weren't available anyway. Stuff like Hydra and Serpent Society. Had to have Weasel, had to have Blind Al, that stuff was expressed during that marathon 3-hour meeting.
Finally, Liefeld confirmed that he was in a "happy advisory role" for the film.
"So from there I was just available in a happy advisory role and then they landed Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who provide their unique and brilliant script. The inclusion of Colossus and Negasonic [Teenage Warhead] was pure genius, creating a buddy cop style interaction that benefits the entire movie. I cannot stress enough the awe I have for their script."
Thank you Rob for taking the time to talk.
