DEADPOOL Review: The New Standard For R-Rated Super Hero Movies

***We interrupt your Internet surfing to bring you this spoiler-filled DEADPOOL review.***

DEADPOOL is exactly the type of movie the genre needed in an era of PG-13 hero dominance. It's fun, edgy and without any sugar coating; this is a very bold movie that left its funniest moments for your theater seat. The genre's palate has matured in the most literal form.

There's been some decent R-rated super hero movies in the past like BLADE, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE and WATCHMEN to name a few. But none of the past R-rated comic book movies really moved the genre forward with confidence. DEADPOOL is not only confident, but so much so you can visualize him being all cocky and arrogant about it too. This movie isn't on the same game-changing level as THE AVENGERS or THE DARK KNIGHT was for the genre, but it's damn close. DEADPOOL proves there is a place for R-rated films in the super hero movie genre right now. It's like taking Marvel's Netflix shows to the next level as a feature film.

In order to not completely ruin the movie, I will not go into too many details about it so you can sit back and really enjoy most of its hilarity and brutality for yourself. But first, here's a quick list of some of the most memorable moments, which begins the spoilers:

Opening intro shot. Underwear grab. Shot up the ass. Broken limbs. Sawed off. A tiny hand. Unicorn masturbation. Boob courtesy. Underpants rip... and so much more.

The opening intro shot to the movie is absolutely hilarious as the movie fades-in from black. It's a frozen action moment with the camera moving all around the scene to reveal some really funny stuff that is happening in this moment. Quick examples are Deadpool grabbing a goons underwear, a wallet with a Green Lantern trading card hanging out of it and when you expect all the names of the actors in the film, instead, it's a list of things like the director being called "An overpaid asshole."

But let's get right into the fact that this is an origin movie mixed within a love story, a raunchy comedy and an action movie. Before you groan out loud about the thought of having to sit through another comic book origin movie, DEADPOOL takes place in two different timelines: one is current and the other is over a year ago. The latter timeline tells the origin tale while modern day has him going after Ajax, who told Deadpool he could heal his skin condition which was a side effect of curing Wade Wilson's terminal cancer. Speaking of timelines, Deadpool jokes about that in the X-Men movie franchise.

Perfectly blending with all of the vulgar jokes is some bloody, brutal action. Like blood spraying everywhere and body parts being lopped off. It's definitely not for anyone who has a weak stomach especially because there's one moment where you can hear bone being cut through. This moment provides for a disgusting, yet funny, sequence which ends with a very inappropriate joke. (I'm definitely not ruining that laugh for you.)

All of the actor performances are great although Ajax is just villain fodder for Deadpool. T.J. Miller is funny but you know he was even funnier in the filthier takes that didn't make it past the editing room. Actor Morena Baccarin is definitely not a damsel in distress. In fact, she's beautiful in this movie. From her having short hair to long hair to her gorgeous body to her tough attitude; she's the perfect pairing for Wade Wilson and Deadpool.

Colossus, on the other hand, is the best version of the character seen in a movie. This is the Colossus you wanted to get in past X-Men movies and he is not only the connective tissue to the X-Men movie universe but his fight scenes are funny. There's a moment when he's fighting Angel Dust and her breast pops out and Colossus stops engaging her in the fight to bring it to her attention. She's thankful but uses that as a means to attack the metal mutant while his guard is down.

Then there's also a sequence when Colossus first shows up and Deadpool tries to beat up the metal mutant. Without ruining too much of this fantastically funny scene, all I'll say are that Deadpool figures out he's outmatched by Colossus' skin and you're going to laugh pretty hard at it.

He also makes fun of Wolverine. A lot. There's more than your fair share of Wolverine quips as well as Hugh Jackman humor.

The ending has its logical closure but the door is left wide open by Colossus for Deadpool to enter into the X-Men movie universe by hopefully joining the team. A tempting offer that could be explored in a potential sequel.

It is really, really hard to find any big issues with DEADPOOL. Some of the most hardcore fans might have some issues with the characterization of this version of Deadpool compared to the more raunchy, disturbing and insane version read in the pages of his comics. But this is a movie and of course it'll be a slightly new adaptation of the character. This is the movie version the fans deserved.

However, if I'm going to nitpick then I have to mention that the movie's score seemed non-existent. There was no main theme that recurred throughout the film and if there was, then it was obviously not memorable. Meanwhile, the use of artist's songs is spot-on.

And watch out for Easter Eggs. The most hardcore Deadpool fans and comic readers will see a lot them.

As I said above, DEADPOOL is a fun, edgy and bold movie without any sugar coating. Director Tim Miller, Ryan Reynolds (who was born to play this role) and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick nailed it. Its R rating may not get it close to making $1 billion in the worldwide box office, but this movie should make more than enough profit for Fox to green light a sequel in the coming weeks.

Finally, make sure to stay through the credits because not only are there funny animated parts during it but there is a post credits scene that will have you shaking your head at Deadpool... because he's such an asshole.

UPDATE 2/7/16 12:31 a.m. ET: Per Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld there will be a second credits scene added to the theatrical release of DEADPOOL. Click here to read about it.
