“What’s the point of stopping Savage...if we only become immoral as he is in the process?”
So I’ll just go ahead and say it. This episode of LEGENDS OF TOMORROW was pretty slow. In the big picture this episode wasn’t much to run home about. After last week’s two episode stretch, we needed to slow down a bit. But even though it was pretty slow, there were a lot of details that were fantastic.
For most of the episode we stayed in 2046 Star City, which looked fairly good. But what really stole the show for me was Connor Hawke. The source material behind the character of Connor Hawke was tweaked in a great way so he could fit into this universe. He seemed a little too detailed for me to think he could only be in maybe one or two episodes. After a few moments of him on screen, I started to think that maybe Connor Hawke could be viewed on this show in the same vein as John Constantine? I really wanted to know more on why he goes by Connor Hawke and not John Diggle Jr. If he is received well, could he maybe be a possible cast member for season 2?
What I really loved more about this episode was the details of the situation that our team was in, and not really the situation itself. What really drew me was the reality that we found the remaining members of Team Arrow in. I think I really may have been more interested in the Arrow storytelling than what was going on for the LOT team. What was this Uprising about? What’s Grant Wilson’s story? Could we be seeing Ravager again? Is this a preview of things to come for Arrow? Also, the idea of a goateed and one armed Oliver Queen will always be fantastic and make any nerd happy, but maybe throw some more effort into it. If the powers that be in DC TV can make a giant talking shark person, you’d think they could do better than Halloween makeup.
Since we can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen in every episode, some of the other members on the team needed something to do. The “love triangle” with Ray, Kendra and Jax really wasn’t much more than time filer. Although it did show more connection with Jax and Prof. Stein, I really can’t say that I enjoyed it or that it really contributed much.
Everything that went on with Snart and Rory was great. More than great, I really think it was necessary for the storytelling. It seems likely we will be shown more of this in next week’s episode. I can’t help but wonder if Snart has gone full anti-hero yet? We are seeing how the situation is changing these two men. They’re thinking about the greater good, teamwork and loyalty. They’re also questioning their prior beliefs, something that is great for character development. These new feelings are testing these two men, and sooner or later any bulls are bound to lock horns.
I think if anyone made the most changes in this episode it was Rip and Sara. I like the fact that the thought of Rip acting on his own interests all along has finally come to light. It’s going to put this team and the character of Rip at a standstill when it comes to leading these individuals. Sara also still seems to struggle with her loyalties to the team but she still remains a hero. I thought it was a good move for her to want to stay behind and help Connor Hawke when he was captured by Grant Wilson. It helped her team realize the big reason why they’re doing what they’re doing, because “every future is worth fighting for.”
Good episode overall. I thought the big idea was very much just okay... but I loved the tie in to Arrow. I would love to possibly see this same idea again, maybe with The Flash family?
