Profile: Get to Know CABLE, His Origin and Connections to the X-MEN, DEADPOOL and Apocalypse

Nathan Summers first appeared in Uncanny X-Men No. 201 (created by Chris Claremont in 1986), but he was not known as Cable. His first appearance as the powerful mutant Cable was in New Mutants No. 87 (created by Louise Simonson and Rob Liefeld in 1990). He is going to make his first live action appearance in the upcoming sequel to the highly successful DEADPOOL movie.

Cable’s alter ego is Nathan Christopher Charles Summers. He is a mutant that is part of the X-Men, X-Force and usually known for his team-ups with Deadpool. Cable was created to be a new leader for the New Mutants. He was supposed to be a man of action and an opposite figure of Charles Xavier.

Cable’s origin story is a complicated one due to his existence being a result of time travel and paradoxes. His story begins with Mr. Sinister, who is a result of experimentation by the all-powerful mutant Apocalypse. Mr. Sinister wanted to rid the world of Apocalypse and he realized that Scott Summers and Jean Grey could produce a powerful mutant who could be capable of doing so. Unfortunately, Jean Grey had already become the Phoenix.

Knowing that Jean Grey was his only chance, Mr. Sinister created a clone of her who became known as Madelyne Pryor. He then manipulated Madelyne and Scott to have a baby so he could control the mutant and to defeat Apocalypse. Cable was so powerful when he was born that Apocalypse woke from his hibernation.

Realizing the Cable could be the doom of him, Apocalypse infected Cable with a techno-organic virus. This virus attacks his human tissue and turns it into metal. In order to save Cable, Rachel Summers, the child of Jean Grey and Scott Summers, travels from the future and takes Cable to the 39th century. However, she is too late to give him a cure and the virus took his left eye, left arm, and left shoulder. In order to fight off this powerful virus, Cable must use the majority of his mutant powers to stop it from spreading, which severely weakens him.

Cable stayed in the 39th century for his protection and was raised as a warrior by Rachel Summers. When he grew older, Cable traveled back in time to the ancient past to try and destroy Apocalypse. Quick speculation: We might expect a Cable Easter Egg in the upcoming film X-MEN: APOCALYPSE since director Bryan Singer will explore Apocalypse in ancient times.

Cable fights Apocalypse and infects him with the techno-organic virus thinking that it would kill him. However, the virus doesn’t even hurt him. Instead, it made him stronger and grants him the ability to give the virus to other people. Centuries later, Apocalypse then uses his new powers to give the virus to Cable, creating a paradox. Cable is ultimately guided by his hatred towards Apocalypse and will do whatever it takes to kill him.

Cable’s powers include telepathy, telekinesis, technopathy (manipulating technology) and he is an expert marksman. Cable caries high-powered laser plasma rifles, explosives, knifes and multiple weapons from the 39th century. His left eye also glows as a result of his mutant powers. Not only that, but he also has time traveling abilities allowing himself to send his consciousness to the past, much like Kitty Pryde did in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

Cable has been known as both an enemy and ally to Deadpool and has even broken the fourth wall like Deadpool before. Whether Cable will be an ally, enemy, or maybe both in DEADPOOL 2 is unknown, but either way he will be an exciting addition to Fox's X-Men movie universe!
