Oh, and Spiderman, but we’ll get to that later.
Is this a Winter Soldier origin flashback? |
Here I think it’s strongly established that Winter Soldier will be presented to us almost as Frankenstein’s monster. He’s going to be someone who’s rejected and hated, even though he may truly have a good heart. Besides the obvious, Hulk, we really haven’t been shown a character in the MCU who people look at like a monster, especially a character who can voice his opinion on it. The Winter Soldier’s journey, come the end of this film, will be an interesting one to say the least.
Thaddeus Ross is back! |
One of my favorite things so far about this movie is that it’s giving us something, and stressing on it heavily, that we haven’t really been exposed to so far in Marvel movies. It’s the simple idea that the Avengers and people with 'powers' are incredibly dangerous individuals. The repercussions of said individuals' actions can lead to dangerous outcomes, presented in this scene by William Hurt and his character General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross. I really like that someone is coming after these heroes and forcing them to be responsible. But it also wouldn’t hurt if he became Red Hulk either.
It seems pretty evident in this film we’ll also be getting s big introduction of T’Challa, otherwise known as Black Panther, although his full origin will be saved for his solo movie in 2018. He’s a character that, I believe, will be extremely crucial to the overall Civil War storyline. If you think about it, he really doesn’t truly have a side. Wakanda is his only side and he’s going to do whatever he has to do to protect it.
Besides the story that will be given with our various heroes going head to head with each other. This movie is also important because it truly is establishing a new world. Things are being done in response to the Avengers, SHIELD, Hydra, etc. People aren’t just standing aside and watching destruction. They’re doing something about it and holding people accountable. I believe the above screencap shows some sort of paramilitary structure, that General Ross could be behind, to fight the new threats that are showing up in this world.
The new Stark Watch Mark I is already sold out everywhere. |
Forget the whole mumbo jumbo on social responsibility to the good of man for a second and remember why we watch these movies in the first place, TO BE ENTERTAINED BY SUPER COOL THINGS. That idea couldn’t be more evident in this shot, which obviously shows some sort of upgrade Tony Stark made to his 'Apple watch.'
When it comes down to it, this movie is going to be about the simple idea of two men and their allies going against each other. They’re going against each other not to show who the Alpha male is or to conquer the other; they’re going against each other because of their beliefs. It’s something that makes the overall Civil War storyline not only a very personal drama but overall an extremely heavy story. It could lead to a very emotional ending come the time when the credits are about to roll.
I throw Ant-Man in here for two reasons. 1.) Because he finally has his new suit which hopefully leads to him becoming more of a major player in the MCU. And 2.) leading up to the shooting of this movie and all the rumors that follow, we really haven’t heard much about Scott Lang other than the fact that he’s loyal to Cap. This leads me to believe Marvel is going the Spider-Man route with this character and purposely leaving out a lot of information and footage reveals to increase the shock value once it’s in theaters. When I say shock value for Ant-Man you know I’m talking about Giant-Man! We’ve heard rumors and seen toy leaks, but I won’t believe it until I see a giant boot trying to crush a member of Team Iron Man. This may be my biggest fan-boy moment of the movie.
So we finally have it. Our first look at Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Not a lot to make huge opinions so far, but enough to know he’s going to be a major player in the MCU. This is a new Spiderman that needs to stick out and be its own entity away from the other versions. I think him holding Cap’s shield and his (somewhat meta) "Hey everyone!" dialogue was a good snippet to show that yes he's a kid, but he’s also someone to be taken seriously. Unless you want a face full of webs.
