This is not a good sign for 20th Century Fox's hopeful X-Men spin-off movie GAMBIT. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that production on the Cajun mutant's movie has been delayed until the end of 2016.
Previously, GAMBIT was supposed to start production last fall but an alleged inflated budget, script re-writes (due its high budget) and the loss of director Rupert Wyatt pushed the filming start timeframe to the first quarter of 2016. That delay also resulted in the removal of GAMBIT from its planned release in October 2016.
Since then Fox has hired on director Doug Liman to replace Wyatt.
Unfortunately, GAMBIT has been delayed yet again for reportedly more re-writes to the script and this has pushed the production start timeframe back to sometime at the end of 2016.
It is uncertain how this could affect current leading actor Channing Tatum since he's been attached to the title role through all of this. His commitment to the role and character have been noted several times over the past six months by the actor, but this new delay might not be a good sign for all parties involved.
In the meantime it seems like Liman is still committed, but he will reportedly direct Amazon.com's first original movie, The Wall.
For the sake of Gambit fans everywhere, we can only hope this movie will actually get made... and get made the right way. As of the publishing of this post, Fox has yet to set a new release date for GAMBIT.
