BATMAN V. SUPERMAN Drops 69% in its 2nd Weekend to Bring in $51M Domestically; $1B Worldwide Seems Unlikely

UPDATE 4/4 11:06 a.m. ET: The actuals are in and BATMAN V. SUPERMAN had an official drop of 69-percent, which is 1-percent higher than estimated on Sunday to bring just a bit less than estimated with $51 million domestic. Overseas it dropped 67-percent to bring in $85M and its current worldwide total is now at $682M.
---

BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE had quite a drop-off in its second weekend of release. Its drop is larger than any recent Batman or Superman movie's second weekend of release. The film dropped approximately 68-percent and brought in an estimated $52 million, domestically. This brings its domestic tally to $261M.

Here's the comparisons of the drop-off BATMAN V. SUPERMAN experienced to some of the more recent Batman and Superman movies:

BATMAN V. SUPERMAN dropped 68-percent.
BATMAN BEGINS dropped 43-percent.
THE DARK KNIGHT dropped 52-percent.
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES dropped 61-percent.
SUPERMAN RETURNS dropped 58-percent.
MAN OF STEEL dropped 64-percent.

When you calculate the average drop of these movies it's at 57-percent. So BATMAN V. SUPERMAN was 16-percent lower than the average of any recent film starring Batman or Superman. The next closest drop is from director Zack Snyder's other DC Extended Universe movie, MAN OF STEEL. Either this is a sign of bad word-of-mouth kicking in for BATMAN V. SUPERMAN or maybe the general audience doesn't need a second helping of a movie by Snyder.

The latter might be true as evidenced by Snyder's recent live-action film work and their respective second weekend drops. MAN OF STEEL and its drop is listed above, Sucker Punch dropped 68-percent and Watchmen dropped 67-percent. However, 300 dropped only 53-percent while Dawn of the Dead had a 60-percent drop. [All these numbers have been sourced from BoxOfficeMojo.com.]

Based on these figures it can be assumed that while Snyder has seen box office success — Snyder's films have grossed over $2.2 billion worldwide — he has trouble capturing return moviegoers after an opening weekend. This could also be attributed to the fact critics aren't a big fan of his work and he has never scored higher than Dawn of the Dead's 75-percent Fresh Rating on RottenTomatoes.

Overseas, BATMAN V. SUPERMAN took in an estimated $85M. Globally, the movie has brought in over $683M which is more than the $668M MAN OF STEEL made worldwide but less than the $1 billion the THE DARK KNIGHT and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES made, respectively, across the globe.

It seems unlikely BATMAN V. SUPERMAN will have enough steam to cross into the $1B worldwide territory and it seems likely to land somewhere in the $800M range, which, according to a Variety report, is the amount Warner Bros. needs to be at to recoup its investment after all the costs and marketing dollars they put into the movie. Sure there's somewhat of a chance to break $1 billion in the coming weekends, but with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR looming on May 6 the clock is ticking.
