BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: Zack Snyder Shares Why He Needed to Show That Origin Story Again

***This post contains SPOILERS for BATMAN V. SUPERMAN***

As BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE rolls into its second weekend of release, those who have seen it know that the origin of Batman was shown again. Some didn't mind seeing it again, but others think his origin never needs to be shown in a live action movie ever again.

Director Zack Snyder spoke with Forbes discussing the need to show the origin sequence at the start of the movie.

"When we were shooting the title sequence, that whole idea about, 'Do we really need to see the death of the Waynes again,' is a big thing to take a shot at again. But you realize you need it, because it actually pays off. And I really wanted to do it all the way.
"[Batman and Superman are] both born and live in a world where someone can care about them and mourn them, and they can love their mother. And that’s the cool thing, you know we spend so much time with the Martha-Clark relationship that I think it kind of pays off there. You realize, oh, we needed that as viewers, so we could get to a moment with Batman where that moment with Martha resonates. Because we’ve lived on with Clark’s relationship with his mother, so that moment is like, 'Wow, that’s ringing for me and I feel it.'"

Snyder has somewhat of a point but, personally for me, it felt like showing the entire Wayne shooting scene was more to show his homage to writer/artist Frank Miller's comic book work. Specifically, the part when shooter's gun gets caught on Martha Wayne's necklace as seen in the comic panels below.

A great homage to Miller, for sure, but one that wasn't necessary to the movie. The resonance of both Bruce and Clark Kent having their mothers named Martha is significant, and an interesting turn in the movie, but all that was needed was a quick scene of Bruce visiting his parents' grave and showing Martha Wayne's nameplate in the mausoleum.

That would've been more than enough of a reference than showing the entire Wayne death scene all over again. Plus it would have cut down the movie's runtime just a bit to improve the overall pacing.
