CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Looking at Over $190 Million Domestic Opening and Possibly as High as $250M Overseas
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR won't be able to break the all-time worldwide super hero movie opening record set by BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, $422 million, in March because it's not opening in the same weekend across the globe. But the next Marvel Studios movie is set to pull in an Avengers-like amount of money in both its domestic and International opening weekends.
Last week, projections for the domestic opening were at $175M but it was also stated how that number could reach as high as $200M. Today, an updated projection has been provided by Deadline and it's looking like CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will bring in over $190M in its opening domestic frame.
Marvel Studios' two biggest domestic openings are THE AVENGERS, with $207M, and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, at $191M. Currently in third place is IRON MAN 3 with $174M. If Civil War brings in over $190M then there's a solid chance it could finish as the studios' second or third biggest domestic opener.
Overseas, Civil War is predicted to open somewhere between $200-$230M. This comes from Deadline, too, and their box office sources say CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR could even open as high as $250M overseas, too.
No matter what way you look at it, this movie is going to be another hit for Disney and Marvel; shout out to the intros of Spider-Man and Black Panther for helping with this as well. If the highest projected opening numbers come into play — along with help from good reviews and positive word-of-mouth — then there's a good chance CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR could join THE AVENGERS, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and IRON MAN 3 in the $1 billion worldwide club, too.
