Editorial: You're Part of the Problem if You Can't See Gender Equality Issues in the Super Hero Movie Genre

Last night The Daily SuperHero struck a negative chord with a section of DC fanboy nation from a suggestion made in a rumor report about GREEN LANTERN CORPS possibly having three male co-stars. Again, this is just a rumor for a movie that is still four years from release and the suggestion was a simple one: Warner Bros. should consider some gender balance with this movie instead of having three male leads. The criticism has been fiercely negative from mostly the male demographic.

Adding a female co-star to this movie only helps matters of gender balancing especially in the super hero movie genre. Sure, Warner Bros. is coming out with the first female headlining super hero movie with WONDER WOMAN — even before Marvel Studios does it, which is a big win for WB — but rebooting the Green Lantern franchise also brings a big opportunity to add more female heroes (whether human or alien) into the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

GREEN LANTERN CORPS is a unique property because, while it is within the DCEU, it is kind of in a world of its own due to all the Green Lanterns protecting all corners of the cosmos and beyond. This means there is no reason to simply have three male leads in this movie and it allows for a grand mix of genders, race, aliens species and more.

And let's not forget about Marvel Studios' issues with gender balancing in their super hero films. Sure they have Black Widow and Scarlet Witch in major hero roles as well as Maria Hill and Sharon Carter in minor hero roles, but that's really it. However, they are working on adding more girl power as Wasp and Captain Marvel will be introduced into major hero roles in the coming years. Each will have their name in upcoming movie titles with the latter having her own solo movie. Meanwhile, Fox is better at having a good mix of female heroes in their ensemble X-Men films but they have yet to make a female headlining solo movie. (Having an X-23 solo movie could be their ticket at making this happen.)

Warner Bros. and DC Films are still behind because they have Wonder Woman and Mera is coming in JUSTICE LEAGUE but that's it right now. In a growing movie universe that includes no other female hero presence in solo movies outside of WONDER WOMAN there's so many Green Lanterns so there's room to bring a female Green Lantern into the spotlight.

Maybe this was not conveyed clearly in last night's post but this was the whole point of last night's suggestion that caused some fans to react as if it was said that there should be an all-female GREEN LANTERN CORPS movie . This was not the case nor implication and surely many who have been negative didn't even read the post past its headline.

Speaking of the headline, saying something 'lacks gender balance' is not click-bait because click-bait is a tactic used to mislead in a headline. There was no misleading and those who did read the post saw that, too.

Finally, to respond to the worst negative comments and hatred... grow up. It's past the time to leave your personal bubble. We are in a society were gender equality improvements are needed across the board. If you can't see this then you're just part of the problem.
