Marvel Issues Statement on the Casting of The Ancient One in DOCTOR STRANGE

Ever since the first teaser trailer for Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE released there's been some criticism about the casting of actor Tilda Swinton in the role of The Ancient One. In the comics, the role has been played by an older Tibetan male and this was the source of the whitewashing criticisms Marvel has been on the receiving end of over the past two weeks.

Marvel issued the following official statement on the matter through the website Mashable:

"Marvel has a very strong record of diversity in its casting of films and regularly departs from stereotypes and source material to bring its MCU to life. The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic. We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray this unique and complex character alongside our richly diverse cast."

DOCTOR STRANGE releases on November 4.
