BBC News is reporting the title of the first Spider-Man movie based within the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. This report is based on the fact that Marvel recently secured the domain name SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com last week. [UPDATE: When you go to this domain URL you'll now be redirected to Sony Pictures' website, so this could be the title of their in-development non-MCU canon animated Spider-Man movie.]
This would be an interesting, albeit weird, movie title for Marvel Studios' first co-produced Spider-Man movie in the MCU with Sony Pictures. And there is a comic book story with the same story title that has an iconic appearance of Spidey's black suit in Amazing Spider-Man No. 252. (Hmmm... maybe some Venom set-up? Pretty please!) In this book there are appearances by Captain America, Thor and Rhodey wearing an Iron Man suit, not his War Machine suit. This then could imply an old rumor claiming Robert Downey Jr. might appear in the next Spider-Man movie is be true, but the actor would have to add this movie onto his Marvel Studios contract as he did to be in this summer's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.
If you consider how this Spidey movie will take place in high school with a John Hughes-like vibe to it, homecoming could be a speculative reference to Peter Parker's high school Homecoming. As well as a possible nod to Spider-Man finally coming home to Marvel and into the MCU. A comic arc titled 'Spider-Man: Mary Jane: Homecoming' also shares this subtitle name.
The BBC's report also stated filming may take place at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta in a few months, which is the location where GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is currently filming and the AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR movies are set to begin filming later this year. Although Spidey's next movie filming in Atlanta has been a rumor for some time, too.
Marvel Studios and/or Sony Pictures have yet to comment on this report.
Spider-Man's next solo movie will release in theaters on July 7, 2017.
