SUPERGIRL Season 1 Episode 19: 'Myriad' Recap

Last time we saw Kara, she was watching her potential boyfriend walk into a crowd with other zombie-like citizens of National City. The first step of Non's Myriad program. Non and his new partner in crime, Indigo decides to take it a step further and force acting director of the DEO Lucy Lane, also in a zombie-like state, into releasing all the prisoners they have in captivity from Fort Roz.

Supergirl comes in time to stop them from letting all of evil aliens and immediately leaves to find help as the Fortress of Solitude and speak to a hologram of her mother, after guilt tripping the droid looking after the place, to ask her about Myriad, which is what Astrid Non developed on Krypton to get them sentence to Fort Roz. They wanted to use mind control on the citizens to save the planet from the depleting resources.

While National City is quarantined due to this outbreak, Supergirl decides to go to Catco where all the employees including Winn and James are working on some type of Kryptonian code on their computer. Cat walks in as though nothing has changed and is seemingly unaffected by this. Hmmm.

Superman flying to come help but he is also affect by Myriad and turns into a mindless drone too getting in line with the army of citizens below them. Without getting even a flash of his face. Convenient. It's at this moment that Maxwell Lord decides to show his slimy face. He explains that Non is using his satellite to spread the signal and that he wasn't affected because of the Ion Blockers he created to scramble the signal before it reaches his brain, which are also in the diamond earrings he sent to Cat the night before. Superman seems to only be affected because he was raised here on earth by humans so it affects him similar to them.

Maxwell Lord's solution is to kill Non, Indigo and his groupies, much to Kara's chagrin. Non shows up and tries to convince her on his side telling him that controlling the citizens will help to save the world from its problems (global warming, famine, starvation). When Supergirl refuses to accept this, Non forces James and Winn and another coworker Kelly to jump off the balcony. Supergirl only catches Winn and James and Kelly falls to her death.

After the death of her coworker, Kara decides to help Maxwell Lord to kill Non and the others. Maxwell wants to use a weapon against the Kryptonians he created which will also kill 8 percent of National City's human population and wouldn't let Supergirl or Superman return. Kara initially agreed to go along with the terrible plan but after a talk with Cat she realizes she needs to find another way to save the city. This episode did raise a great ethical question, a common one that plagues superheros; Is it worth it to risk a small percent for the greater good? Of course in the end, Supergirl is Supergirl and she couldn’t go through with it. Just like a real superhero.

Alex and Hank are on the run and decide to hold up in Alex's mother house. They fill Dr. Danvers in on the need to know, but of course not about her husband possibly being alive. There they discover what is actually happening in National City. Alex decides to go back to help with Hank. Indigo finds them, defeats Hank and kidnaps Alex to bring to Non.

Kara, Cat and Maxwell are working on broadcasting a symbol that will, in a manner of speaking, wake the people of National City up. Outside, Kara finds her dear old sister Alex under the control of Non and Indigo who bring her to fight Supergirl with the same sword Alex used to kill Astra. With no choice, the two sisters begin to fight.

It’ll definitely be interesting to see the Danver sisters fight it out this time with no restraint, but it’s doubtful even mind control by Non will get either of them to truly hurt each other… not seriously anyways. While the finale probably will end in Kara’s favor, ending up with a boyfriend and taking out her evil uncle Non and Indigo, with James and Winn nearly dying and Alex attacking her (under mind control), it seems like the show is setting up for a death that will actually stick. My guess fake Hank / Martian Manhunter / J’onn J’onzz will be getting the boot, he’s cheated death too many times.

This episode could’ve been better. The first half was great, fighting villains, taking names and learning the bad guy’s plan, but the last half felt lackluster. However, it was clear they were setting up for the finale, which looks to be great and hopefully end on surprising note.
