X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Character Profile, Angel and Archangel

Angel, or also known as Warren Kenneth Worthington lll, is a mutant who comes from a wealthy family that is not aware of his mutation. He first appeared in the Uncanny X-Men No. 1, which was released in September 1963; Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created him.

Warren’s mutation sprouted him a pair of white feather wings which granted him the ability to fly. Before attending Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Warren attending many other boarding schools. While attending Fairburn Boys School, he saved two students from a dorm fire and saved another from a school bully. Realizing he had the ability to help others, he made a costume for himself and starting helping others as the Avenging Angel.

This caught the eye of Professor Charles Xavier and he invited Warren to attend his school and join the X-Men. Warren accepted and became one of the founding members of the X-Men along with Cyclops, Iceman, Beast and Marvel Girl. Warren began his training as Angel and used a harness created by Professor X to contain his wings. Warren was known as a carefree student and would often skip class and hang out with his girlfriend who he had known since childhood, Candy Southern.

After a battle with Magneto, the F.B.I. saw the X-Men as a threat and forced them to disband. Warren was returned home to his parents but continued to fight crime and visit Candy in secret. While sneaking out one night, his father was killed by the henchman of the diamond smuggler, Dazzler. Soon after, the same men kidnapped Candy.

Furious that he was putting people he loved in danger while he was sneaking out to fight others, Warren went to rescue her. While he was fighting Dazzler, his mask was removed and his identity was revealed. When Dazzler realized that Angel was Warren, it was revealed that Dazzler was Warren’s uncle Burt Worthington. Angel and Burt fought and Burt was supposedly killed after falling from a great height.

First appearance of Archangel was in 1988.
[Editor note: Burt Worthington as Dazzler is no relation to the mutant Alison Blaire who becomes known as Dazzler and, later, is a part of the X-Men in the Marvel comics universe.]

Eventually the X-Men reunited and tragedy struck Warren again as the Burt returned steal his family fortune. He was able to stop the his uncle's plot, but his mother was poisoned and died in Warren's arms. Soon after, a fight left Warren wingless leaving him in despair causing him to break-up with Candy.

In his lowest hours, Angel met Apocalypse who was able to give him new techno-organic wings. These wings allow Angel to be much stronger and granted him the ability to throw razor sharp feathers tipped with poison from his wings. After gaining this new power his skin turned blue and he became Archangel, one of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse.

Prior to becoming Archangel, Warren’s feather wings spanned 16-inches and were very flexible. While flying, he can reach up to 150 miles-per-hour thanks to his hollow bones and little body fat. His wings are so strong he can carry an additional 200 pounds, excluding his own body weight. He also has enhanced eyesight that allows him to see while flying. In addition to his mutant powers, he is skilled in hand-to-hand combat.

While we have already seen a live action Angel in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, the timeline being altered as a result of the events in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST allows Angel to join the X-Men earlier than in the older trilogy. In the third X-Men movie, we got a good glimpse of Angel and his conflicting decision whether to be accepted by his father or to embrace his mutant powers.

In the upcoming X-MEN APOCALYPSE, it looks like we won’t get much of Angel, but rather will get a lot of the dark and brain washed Archangel. This timeline’s Warren is given upgraded wings just like his Archangel comic book counterpart. It doesn’t look like his skin will turn blue, but instead Apocalypse givea him marks across his face. Either way, Archangel will do his best to serve his master and try to destroy the newly formed X-Men.
