CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Has $33 Million Haul in its 3rd Weekend to Become Marvel Studios' 4th $1 Billion Movie
Today's big goal for studios' tentpole films is to get into the exclusive $1 Billion Club. Marvel Studios has its fourth member as CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR crossed the $1B barrier in the worldwide box office this weekend.
Civil War joins THE AVENGERS, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and IRON MAN 3 in the $1B Club. Worldwide, it has brought in $1.05B with $706 million of that coming from International grosses.
Domestically, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR was unseated by ANGRY BIRDS, who took first place with $39M, but still finished in second bringing in an estimated $33M in its third weekend of release. It's total of $347M moves Civil War into second place for 2016 domestic grosses right behind the $362M DEADPOOL has made.
Worldwide, Civil War became the No. 1 movie of 2016 earlier in the week and it is the lone $1B movie this year right now.
With the extended Memorial Day weekend coming, Civil War will face its fiercest competition yet as both X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS open in U.S. theaters.
