CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Has 5th Biggest Domestic Opening at $179 Million and is Already at $673M Worldwide

This should have been a foregone conclusion that CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR would open big. The buzz and hype were real once it was revealed that Marvel Studios removed their review embargo to the biggest news outlets who saw the movie in early April. When a review embargo is lifted that early, it's a sign of extreme confidence by a studio.

According to initial estimates, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opened with $181.8 $179 million. (Updated with actuals.)

At this number, Civil War is the No. 5 domestic opening weekend earner of all-time behind STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ($247M), JURASSIC WORLD ($208M), THE AVENGERS ($207M) and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON ($191M). Civil War pushed another Marvel Studios movie, IRON MAN 3 ($174M), out of the Top 5.

Overseas the movie has already brought in over $496 million to bring its worldwide total to an astounding $673M!

Without any heavy hitter competition in the box office until X-MEN: APOCALYPSE opens on May 27, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR should easily hit the $1 billion mark making it the fourth Marvel Studios film to do so along with THE AVENGERS, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and IRON MAN 3.

Its predecessor, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, brought in $714M during its entire theatrical run and Civil War looks to beat that mark in the coming days... which is most impressive.

Please note: These are all estimates and actuals are reported Monday afternoon.
