The first estimates are in for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and they are huge. According to Variety, the Marvel Studios film is estimated to have brought in over $75 million combined for Thursday night screenings ($25M) as well as on Friday ($50M).
This means the domestic weekend opening is looking at a $180M range.
While the $180M opening estimate is definitely a big one, it is down from the pre-release estimates stating the movie could break the $200M barrier in its opening weekend. However, there is no reason to be disappointed as the movie has already brought in over $291M in the International box office after it opened in many markets last weekend.
When the dust settles, and all actuals are reported on Monday afternoon, there is a good chance CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will have already amassed over half of the worldwide total of its predecessor, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, which took in $714M worldwide during its theatrical run.
