DC Films Co-Head Geoff Johns is Saying All the Right Things About SUPERMAN and the Future of the DCEU
You may not know the name but he's been a comic book writer for over a decade, he's been DC Entertainment's CCO and he's been an executive producer and consultant on several DC movies, too. And last night it was reported that Geoff Johns has been made the co-head of Warner Brothers' new film division focused on its super hero movies, DC Films.
A move to help firmly establish Warner's DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movies as their chief competitor Marvel Studios has been able to do since 2008. What Warner Bros. has lacked since the launch of their DCEU is a person who knows all the characters really well and who can help guide all the connective tissue of multiple DC Films movies into a cohesive universe in today's long form storytelling trend. Plus, make sure each hero and villain is represented in a manner that is both good for the general audience and for the most hardcore comic book readers. This is why Johns is a good fit in this new role because he knows these characters like the back of his hand
After the news broke last night that Johns was to be the co-head of DC Films, with Jon Berg, he met with the website Vulture as well as a few other news outlets in a New York conference room to talk.
Vulture writes:
"Even though he declined to directly address [the] topic [of being named DC Films co-head], he was more than willing to talk about where he thinks the DC brand needs to go. One phrase came out of his mouth over and over again: 'hope and optimism.' Though Johns would never speak ill of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or its director, Zack Snyder — Johns is nothing if not loyal to the company that made him a star — it’s crystal clear that his vision for DC looks a lot brighter than the much-maligned grimness Snyder provided earlier this year."
Director Zack Snyder has been widely criticized about his version of Superman — which is no fault of actor Henry Cavill but he definitely needs to smile more moving forward. So Johns' mention of "hope and optimism" should be music to fans' ears because that should be the Superman we get from now on in his future appearances in the DCEU.
“I think people make a mistake when they say, ‘Superman’s not relatable because he’s so powerful," Johns said. "I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me? He’s a farmboy from Kansas who moves to the city and just wants to do the best he can with what he’s got.’ That’s the most relatable character in the world."
Comments like this will do nothing but endear Johns to the fan base more than ever before. However, with Johns still maintaining his CCO title with DC this means he's still overseeing comics publishing, DC television shows and now DC Films. Hopefully, he doesn't stretch himself too thin because the DCEU needs as much of his focus as possible.
