Based on new information provided by X-Men movie producer Simon Kinberg, to Collider, writer/director Josh Boone's NEW MUTANTS spin-off movie is hopefully going to start filming in early 2017. This places the movie's projected release for one of Fox's two release dates in 2018 for Marvel movies on January 12 and July 13.
Fox currently has one other release date set aside for a Marvel movie on October 7, 2017 and after it's impressive theatrical run, it seems logical to assume that DEADPOOL 2 might be targeting this date next year. Filming and production doesn't have to begin until October (-ish) this year in order to make its release deadline. DEADPOOL is Fox's highest grossing Marvel franchise ever and that fact alone screams fast-tracking for its sequel so the studios can strike while the iron is hot.
There is also a chance DEADPOOL 2 might target one of those two 2018 release dates in order to not rush its development process. However, with a lower budget than pretty much all other super hero movies that come out, DEADPOOL 2 doesn't need the biggest and more elaborate sets and locations.
Fox has already confirmed DEADPOOL 2 is in development with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning to writing duties and director Tim Miller is coming back to the helm.
As of right now, Fox's movie development docket includes DEADPOOL 2, NEW MUTANTS, an assumed X-MEN: APOCALYPSE sequel, the now-stuck-in-development purgatory GAMBIT movie and an X-FORCE movie that stopped its development when the villain Apocalypse was used for this month's X-Men movie instead.
