Decade Placement Trend Continues as Next X-MEN Movie Will Take Place in the 1990s

This reveal shouldn't surprise any Marvel or X-Men fan as the trend has been crystal clear since X-MEN: FIRST CLASS released and was set in the 1960s. Followed by X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST being set in the 1970s (as well as in a futuristic timeline, too). As well as this month's release of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is set in the 1980s.

Now, producer Simon Kinberg has confirmed to ComingSoon that the next X-Men movie will take place in the 1990s.

With a group of new actors cast in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE in the roles of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler, Jubilee and several others, it makes sense to continue the story following this new roster. Previously hints have been made that the next X-Men movie could take cues from the comic book story arc 'Dark Phoenix Saga.'

It is still unknown if actors Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast) could return because they were contracted for only three X-Men movies. Each has expressed interest in more X-Men movies.

But there is also the issue that these First Class actors won't look like they've aged 30-years since the events of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS because it took place in the 60s. Moving the franchise into the 90s does create somewhat an aging issue which might be ignored; if/when this bridge is crossed the aging issue should be addressed somehow.
