This is not a spoiler for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE because it is nothing more than assumption right now. However, once Sophie Turner was cast in the role of a young Jean Grey it was a logical clue that a retelling of the Phoenix / Dark Phoenix story line could be coming in a future X-Men movie.
Last month director Bryan Singer had already starting hinting that the next X-Men movie could feature Jean Grey dealing with the Phoenix / Dark Phoenix within. And he's also been hinting that he would like to explore the cosmos in a future X-Men movie, too, which implies a potential story basis from the 'Dark Phoenix Saga' comic book arc.
Over on Entertainment Weekly, producer Simon Kinberg is now teasing the Dark Phoenix.
“I definitely would love to take another stab at the Dark Phoenix story,” says Kinberg.
Turner also commented on the future possibility of the Phoenix from within.
“The seeds of Phoenix definitely are... there," Turner says. "She can’t control her powers unless she either fully stops them or lets them all loose, and that’s kind of Phoenix. I think in future movies to come we’ll definitely see a bit more of that.”
None of this should not surprise any X-Men fan because movies in the super hero genre are not only meant to standalone, but their greater purpose is to build up the next events in upcoming films, too.
The last time we saw the Phoenix / Dark Phoenix was in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, as played by Famke Janssen, and it's only a matter of time until the story line came back into play. While X-MEN: THE LAST STAND didn't do the Phoenix / Dark Phoenix any real justice on the big screen, it's unfortunate with all the other great X-Men comic book stories to pull inspiration from that it seems like Kinberg is just going back to the same comic book canon he pulled from since he wrote The Last Stand.
If this is the case, then fans can only hope that the Phoenix / Dark Phoenix is done the right way the next time.
