Marvel Studios will not be the ones who release the first female headlining super hero movie because Warner Bros. and DC Films are bringing WONDER WOMAN to theaters next year. Marvel won't have their first female headlining movie until their 19th film release which is actually the co-headlined ANT-MAN AND THE WASP in 2018, followed by their 20th studio release which will officially be their very first female-led tentpole with CAPTAIN MARVEL, in 2019.
The fact remains that it will have taken Marvel Studios way too long. Sadly, they could have released a female-leading movie much sooner had a solo BLACK WIDOW movie been green lit. There's been petitions, campaigns and all other sorts of attempts by fans to get Marvel Studios to green light a BLACK WIDOW movie, but nothing has happened on that front.
Fandango (via USA Today) polled 1,000 fans who went to see CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and a whopping 48-percent want a solo BLACK WIDOW movie. The rest of the breakdown is as follows:
- Black Widow - 48%
- Vision - 15%
- Falcon - 12%
- Hawkeye - 10%
- War Machine - 8%
- Scarlet Witch - 7%
The brain trust at Marvel Studios are obviously smart enough to have an impressive string of hit movies but they have a portion of the fanbase ready to pay to see a solo BLACK WIDOW movie still waiting. Studio head Kevin Feige told Fandango last month he is definitely open the the idea of a BLACK WIDOW movie but cited how crowded their film schedule makes it difficult very right now.
“Yes, for sure, I think [Black] Widow at some point would be great. But when you start talking about things that are now four/five years away…sometimes we do that. Doctor Strange has been talked about for ten years. But we’re focused on the next nine movies, which is a lot, between now and 2019.”
The problem with this quote is that Feige and the studio found ways to move things around to squeeze in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP as well as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING into their schedule. With INHUMANS now off the release schedule — due to Disney preferring to release INDIANA JONES 5 in the same timeframe — maybe BLACK WIDOW can get her time in the spotlight at the end of 2019. Or maybe in Phase 4 which starts in 2020.
Hey Marvel, in case you decide to make a #BlackWidow movie, I might have made a poster or two already. pic.twitter.com/UlVtCpRahn— SG Posters (@SG_Posters) April 29, 2016
