Producer Simon Kinberg Talks R-Rating Confidence and How a Hopeful X-FORCE Movie Could Be a Fit Too

In case you're not familiar with the development path for Fox's X-FORCE movie, since 2013, let's get you up-to-date first.

Back in July 2013 rumors hit the Internet that 20th Century Fox was working on developing an X-FORCE movie. The following month it was revealed that writer/director Jeff Wadlow was indeed working on a hopeful X-FORCE script. Since then the X-FORCE movie and its development was put on-hold because the main villain in Wadlow's script was Apocalypse and instead producer Simon Kinberg and director Bryan Singer used Apocalypse in this month's new X-MEN: APOCALYPSE movie. This meant X-FORCE became stuck in development purgatory where it's been for the past few years.

In July 2015, at San Diego Comic-Con, DEADPOOL actor Ryan Reynolds began teasing how he would love to see Deadpool appear in a hopeful X-FORCE movie. This past February, Reynolds brought up a possible X-FORCE movie once again and how he'd love for it to be a reality for Deadpool as well as his hope for DEADPOOL 2. Reynolds' latter wish became true but X-FORCE is still stuck in development — although it would make perfect sense if DEADPOOL 2 helps to set-up a possible X-FORCE movie down the road.

Since February it's been quiet on the X-FORCE news front, but with the X-MEN: APOCALYPSE press tour currently ongoing Kinberg has brought up, via DenOfGeek, how a potential X-FORCE movie will most likely be rated-R.

“...But if we were to make an X-Force movie, that probably should be R-rated. And what we're doing with the Wolverine movie... that wasn't impacted by Deadpool. We'd made the decision for Wolverine to be R-rated before Deadpool came out. But I think there's even more confidence about having made that decision now that you see that an R-rated Deadpool movie can do better than any X-Men movie's ever done.”

This could also be seen as a hint that new developments are taking place for X-FORCE... maybe.

Fans can thank DEADPOOL for this increase in confidence to develop certain X-Men movies specifically for an R-rated, but don't expect to see any of the main X-Men movies to get this distinction.
