Simon Kinberg Talks Wolverine and Why His Role in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Was Bigger But Cut Short

***This post contains SPOILERS for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE.***

One of the best moments in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE was when Wolverine is unleashed upon soldiers in full-blown berserker rage Weapon X killing machine mode. You may not have seen all the blood and carnage of Wolverine taking out soldier after solider, but the bodies count was most definitely high.

According to writer and producer Simon Kinberg, while speaking with CinemaBlend, Wolverine's role in the movie was initially much bigger but they decided to cut it down to give Mystique a larger role.

"There was always a notion that we wanted Wolverine to be in the movie. We wanted to find a way to feature him in the film, partly because Bryan [Singer] and I love Hugh [Jackman] so much. We love the character, obviously, and he’s such a huge part of the franchise. There were a lot of iterations of how Wolverine would enter and exit the movie. There was a version when he was going to come in at the midpoint of the film and be like the drill sergeant for the kids and take over as their leader. And we felt like that stepped on Jen’s role in the movie and becoming their leader."

Unfortunately, Jennifer Lawrence's turn as Mystique in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE was her weakest performance compared to X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

And it's easy to say something like this now that the movie is out... while Mystique was the logical choice to be the new X-Men team leader, her role in teaching the students was flat. It would've been a better choice to have Wolverine as their instructor and prepping them for battle or even had Beast prepping the students for a fight since his role dramatically diminished from First Class to Apocalypse.
