E3 2016: New SPIDER-MAN Game Signals the Beginning of Marvel Games' Plan to Come Back to Consoles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It's been years since Marvel video game fans have seen a console title. The most recent ones were the DEADPOOL video game, which released back in 2013, and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 game in 2014. The lack of Marvel games on consoles has left the fanbase sad and desperate for anything on consoles.

Prior to E3 2016 opening its doors, Marvel Games revealed their first teaser trailer for a PS4-exclusive SPIDER-MAN game coming sometime in 2017 (see post link below). Sure, XBox owners have been left out — it is assumed due to the deal Sony made with Marvel Studios for the Spidey movie rights last year — but according to Marvel Games VP Jay Ong, via Polygon, this is only the beginning of a new mandate for Marvel games.

"When I joined Marvel two years ago, I came in with a mandate to usher in a new era for Marvel Games," Ong told Polygon in an interview. "We have a treasure trove of the best superhero characters on earth. What can we do with this to create truly epic games?
"Is [Spider-Man] a signal of things to come? Oh, yes. Absolutely. And we can’t wait to tell the world about it.
"One of our mantras is authenticity; it's easy to make a game with Spider-Man on the label, but it's much harder to make it truly authentic in a way that reflects Peter Parker, the character."

Hearing that Marvel Games is finally moving forward is most definitely signaling they are coming back to gaming consoles. And this is long overdue.

While there's nothing Marvel-related to see or play on the E3 showroom floor this week there is hope for the future. Unfortunately, that future won't be playable until 2017.
