Yesterday, a sensationalist story hit the web alleging that Disney executives were unhappy with an early cut of ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY and it was headed for extensive reshoots. We called out the tabloid source for being too sensational with their headline and report because reshoots are common and their story was being twisted into something more than it really was.
Well, follow-up reports all say that reshoots are indeed happening soon and Disney execs are not freaking out because of any issues with ROGUE ONE.
According to Deadline:
"According to sources, the first cut was lacking the edge that Force Awakens had, and the story needs to jell. The film’s December 16 release date will not be affected, according to one insider — and with Comic-Con fast approaching, hopefully the studio might be able to tease fans with at least a little something."
Per Variety:
Sources say reshoots are expected on ROGUE 1; nothing to worry about, most of the shoot will involve the cameo of a very important character— Justin Kroll (@krolljvar) May 31, 2016
Via The Hollywood Reporter:
Yes, there will be more shooting for ROGUE ONE. The first cut was pretty serious. The new stuff to inject fun, "classic" #StarWars feel.— Borys Kit (@Borys_Kit) June 1, 2016
So there you go. ROGUE ONE will undergo reshoots not because it's in turmoil but because reshoots are normally scheduled for big studio tentpole movies in order to fix problems that arise during the editing process. In this case, ROGUE ONE needs a little bit of story work, which is a common issue found during editing, and it needs some more classic Star Wars feel since it does lead into STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE.
There's no need to panic or worry here because Disney and Lucasfilm's jobs are to bring the best possible movie to Star Wars fans and reshoots are just a normal part of that process.
UPDATE: It would be bad journalism on our part if we didn't report both sides of this story and the website BirthMoviesDeath has heard there are some issue with ROGUE ONE from their sources. Yet, this still needs to be taken with a grain of salt while the big Hollywood trade sites aren't hearing this at all.
"For the last couple of weeks I've been hearing a building buzz about the movie not working, a buzz I kind of wanted to just ignore. I don't really have any specifics, and I can only hope that the whole thing is fixable."
ROGUE ONE releases on December 15.
