Entertainment Weekly has spoken to several, albeit anonymous, sources close to ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY to get the lowdown on all these rumors surrounding the movie's reshoots.
We've bullet-pointed the most important tidbits:
- 4-5 weeks of reshoots ending right before Star Wars Celebration Europe begins on July 15 in London.
- Changes have to do with clarity and character development. "It's a lot of talking in cockpits," an insider told EW were being added during reshoots.
- The plan is to lock-in the movie in mid-August so its musical score can begin, which is earlier than how it happened last year for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, which wasn't locked-in until October 2015 after its reshoots last summer.
- The rumored 40-percent of the movie being reshot is bullsh*t.
- The length of the reshoots have always been planned due to working around all its actors' shooting schedules with other films, although reshoots were pushed back from spring to summer so director Gareth Edwards could do some fine tuning during editing so know what needed to be reworked.
- Writer and director Christopher McQuarrie is not aiding in reshoots nor has he been reworking the script but he did some script tweaks in an earlier draft.
- Writer and director Tony Gilroy has been confirmed to be another contributor and collaborator on the ROGUE ONE script. This spring he provided some notes and additional material to enhance the movie for its reshoots.
- Gilroy provided some new dialogue and he will aid as the second unit director during reshoots.
- The film is not being watered down and will maintain its grittier, war movie tone.
- These rumors over the past week, from sites Page Six and MakingStarWars, have "frustrated the filmmaking team" and future rumors need to be taken with the tiniest grain of salt moving forward.
In the end, this all seems like a classic case of 'sources' not being totally legit. Star Wars is a very hot topic of discussion after STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS became only the third movie ever to top $2 billion in the global box office, so it makes sense why some would run rumors for web hits, but EW seems to have the definitive word on this story.
So it's time to close the door and let reshoots happen. Then, next month at Star Wars Celebration Europe, let's see Lucasfilm's reveals about ROGUE ONE to all the fans at the event. (New trailer please!)
