While there were some pretty serious negatives about the movies, most of the characters saved the film from being worst of the series.
Wolverine's Cameo: Wolverine made an appearance a little after halfway in the movie doing what he did best, kicking ass and taking names. Let's face it, it simply wouldn't have been a real X-Men movie without a scene with Wolverine. I was more than a little disappointed by the short length of his scene but perhaps they're just trying not to confuse us anymore with the wacky timeline.
Magneto's Return: Michael Fassbender always does Magneto justice. He makes you love him, hate him and feel sorry for him. In a heartbreaking scene when Erik sees his wife and child killed by the Polish police, he loses it and attacks them reigniting his villainous role as Magneto. Even the scene when Apocalypse makes him revisit Auschwitz will make you tearful. The most powerful of the Four Horsemen, he's the best enemy of the X-Men and best ally of Apocalypse.
The Young Mutant Squad: It was entertaining to see the teenage versions of the characters we are so familiar with in Jean Grey, Scott Summers and Kurt Wagner (a.k.a. Nightcrawler). Before they were badass X-Men superheroes, they were scrawny teenagers terrified of their powers and going through adolescence. Their scenes together actually worked and foreshadow the beginning of the team they'll become.
Quicksilver: Since Quicksilver appeared in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, he's quickly become a fan favorite. His scenes where he uses his super speed to save the students and teachers of Xavier's school was entertaining. There was more depth to the character as he knows that Magneto is his father and could potentially destroy the world. You can also see a behind the scenes video of how they film Quicksilver's scenes here.
The Post-Credits Scene: For all the loyal superheroes fans who know better than to leave the theater before the end credits, there is a snippet at the end of the movie. A bunch of suits come to clean up the massacre that Wolverine left in his wake and also pack his blood and other research materials. From the briefcase we see closing, we know that it is Essex Corporation doing the cleaning up. This is foreshadowing the possible appearance of Nathaniel Essex (aka Mister Sinister) who is one of the antagonists of the X-men and obsessed with the genetics of mutants. This post-credits scene may be alluding to the next movie, which will be taking place in the 90's.
Five things Apocalypse did wrong:
Apocalypse: Let’s face it. He was pretty snooze-worthy and probably one of the worst things about the movie. Oscar Isaac is talented and could've done so much more with the role, but the character was cheesy, boring, unsubstantial and anyone else feel like he kept repeating himself? Unlike other villains such as, Magneto, there is no sympathy or understanding for the character's motives and actions.
Moira McTaggert: What was the point of her coming back again? She shows up and makes Professor X tongue-tied a couple times and relays information about Apocalypse, but the movie could've done without her. There weren't even enough romantic moments between her and Professor X to justify her reappearance. In several scenes, you forget that she's there until she actually says something. The character was just a waste of screen time [and a missed opportunity].
Jennifer Lawrence's Performance: As sad as it to say, it seemed like Lawrence didn't put much effort into Mystique this time around. The past two movies featuring her have been pretty good, but it felt that she was pretty much done with the role. With rumors that she won't be coming back, her lack of interest showed throughout the film.
The Four Horsemen: Apart from Magneto and Storm, it's hard to truly understand the other mutants' motives to join Apocalypse in his quest. We didn't get much insight on Psylocke and Angel (apart from his broken wings) for joining Apocalypse. They seem to be there more for flash than for substance of character.
The Timeline: It just continues to confuse the audience. This movie is supposed to take place 10 years after Days of Future Past, but the ages seem to be the same and make the appearance of Wolverine in the Weapon X program straight up confusing.
